Firstly, I need to say thanks to Ranbir Shergill at VC Fusion for being kind enough to respond to my email and agree to answer questions. Thank you Sir!
So, Rangers take on the first of our North American pre-season tour opponents, Ventura County Fusion tonight at the Ventura College Sportsplex, which is a 5000 capacity stadium run by Ventura College, a California-state funded community College located in Ventura, California, USA.
Ventura County Fusion (or ‘VC Fusion’ as they’re also known) should be a good test for our squad tonight because they’ve just won their Southwest Division title in the Premier Development League, which is the fourth tier of the U.S. football pyramid and not necessarily anything to be sniffed at, I can assure you!
Why? Because our opponents tonight are very familiar with playing big name teams, having played a good number of English Premier League and other European teams over the past seven or eight years as well as some exhibition/friendly matches against national teams such as Mexico’s U20 & U21 squads.
VC Fusion have faced-up against half a dozen EPL teams and a dozen or so MLS teams amongst many other strong opponents in their short 8 year history and given many of them a run for their money, recording draws against some very good teams and even wins over MLS champions and Swedish champions along the way.
Comments indicate that the Ventura squad will be out to win tonight, so that suggests a competitive game rather than a pre-season warm-up match, fitness exorcise or kick-about ‘friendly’ and I would like to think that’s what the fans in attendance will be expecting too, especially since some of them will have travelled anything up to six thousand miles to catch the game.
From a Gers perspective, it’s basically business as usual in terms of the pre-season preparations and we can probably expect a whole bunch of substitutions in order to give as many players as possible some playing time. That said, the additions of our new (and old/new) signings will obviously warm things up a little with strikers Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller possibly being the main attractions on the night, so presumably those two are certain to feature at some point.
All in all it makes for a very interesting game and if you’re one of the 03:00 am Loyal tuning in here in Great Britain, then hopefully you should get some entertainment value for your loss of sleep.
Mon The Gers!!!
