With Steven Gerrard gone, there are plenty of rumours involving Rangers Football Club that go beyond the identity of the new manager. Who will the next boss bring in and will they be looking at transfer targets as early as January?

There are also some obvious stories relating to potential departures from Ibrox in the winter window. Managers will always be linked with former players but one of the more plausible rumours deserves closer attention.

Morelos to Villa Park?

Gerrard may well choose to avoid causing any ill feeling by aiming to deplete Rangers’ existing squad and, while the story linking Alfredo Morelos to Aston Villa may seem a lazy one, it needs analysing.

He’s an important member of the Ibrox team and one who would surely have been under more scrutiny had it not been for a mixed disciplinary record. He may be too hot to handle for most English clubs but Gerrard has ‘previous’ with the Colombian striker and would not be deterred from making an enquiry if he felt that Morelos could make it in the Premier League.

First Things First

After a long run without a win under former manager Dean Smith, Aston Villa’s first aim is to steer clear of the relegation zone. The club sat in 16th place when their new manager arrived, just two points clear of the bottom three.

As a result of that run, Villa have now become a popular bet for relegation at the end of the current season. Odds supplied by the best betting sites and collated by sbo.net show that the sides currently at the bottom, Norwich City, Newcastle United and Burnley, remain as favourites to go down.

Aston Villa are listed among the chasing pack for now but, if results don’t improve quickly, they will be sucked into that relegation scrap and their odds will shorten. Sbo.net will reflect any changes in the markets and they also have access to the panel of sportsbooks displaying the prices.

Anyone wanting to get involved with football betting can take in news and opinion articles before making a decision. When ready, the sportsbooks have welcome packages in place together with the possibility of claiming additional promotions once on board.

A range of deposit and withdrawal methods are in place to get that account moving while there will be a range of additional football markets from both sides of the Scottish border. Aston Villa are slipping down the table and that would suggest a need for new faces in the winter transfer window.

Villa’s Priorities

Having signed Danny Ings from Southampton in the summer, why would Aston Villa even need another striker? The Villains also have former Brentford forward Ollie Watkins in their squad and he is a player who is thought to have a big future in the game.

It’s a good mix of age and experience up front but it’s not been working. In 18 combined EPL appearances this season, Villa’s list of leading scorers shows that Ings and Watkins have just five goals between them.

Both men have the potential to improve but Villa’s lack of overall firepower is another reason why Alfredo Morelos is being linked. In his first 201 matches at Ibrox, the Colombian has scored 101 goals at a ratio better than one strike every other game. It’s the type of record that attracts other clubs and Villa clearly have that need.

If Gerrard does move for the striker, he would have the support of two former Scottish internationals. Back in April 2020 Alan Hutton, who played for both Aston Villa and Rangers, said that he felt Morelos would thrive in England’s top flight.

More recently, Kris Commons has suggested that the striker would do well south of the border but he was less than convinced about Gerrard’s interest. Commons’ concern was over the ‘high maintenance’ issues attached to the player and felt that this could deter any advance.

With former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith also linked to Alfredo Morelos prior to his departure, it’s inevitable that these stories are going to emerge. Many Rangers fans won’t want to hear them but the rumours are not going away any time soon.
